Mostar – a town in the heart of Herzegovina

I will tell you about my trip in Mostar. First, I want to tell you some facts about geographic location of the town.

Mostar is a town and municipality in Southern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is the most important city in the Herzegovina region, its cultural capital, and the centre of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton of the Federation BiH. Mostar is situated on the Neretva River and is the fifth largest city in the country. Mostar was named after the bridge keepers (mostari) who in the medieval times guarded the Stari Most (Old Bridge) over the Neretva.

The old town of Mostar is so beautiful and the atmosphere of the city is so relaxed, that not even many tourists who wander through the town can destroy it. The Old Bridge, built by the Ottomans in the 16th century, is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s most recognizable landmarks.

My family and I were on our way to Mostar. We spent a few days in Sarajevo, now it was time to move on. The weather was nice for a trip to Mostar. We travelled by car early in the morning, because the temperatures were pretty high. The day was beautiful and bright as any summer day, perfect for longer journey. I wonder, what’s the first thing to visit in Mostar? My family and I are true adventurers.

This wasn’t our first trip to Mostar. Every summer when I am on summer holidays, we are going to Mostar. Roads to Herzegovina are very good and the nature is beautiful. Wherever you stop to rest, there is a hotel or cafe, or you can watch the beautiful countryside. We were almost there, children were impatient. Our main project for the first day was to visit the famous Stari Most (Old Bridge) in Mostar. The atmosphere was so relaxed although the town was crowded with tourists.

The historic town of Mostar was developed in the 15th and 16th century as an Ottoman frontier town and during the short Austro-Hungarian period in the 19th and 20th century. Mostar has long been known for its old Turkish houses and the Old Bridge – Stari most, an extraordinary technological achievement of bridge construction. The historic part of Mostar is a result of interaction between the natural phenomena and human creativity throughout a long historical period. I also really recommend a walk further out of the old town to the war frontline. It’s a completely different setting that will make you look at Mostar in a different way.

As it was summer, I was hoping like, all the tourists, that we will personally enjoy in traditional jumps from the Old Bridge,, which were organized each year. During the season, all tourists, like us, wait for a special sensation – the bridge jumpers. Unfortunately, we weren’t lucky to see the jumps, but our trip to Mostar was not in vain. I enjoyed being with my family every minute in Mostar.

Everyone should visit Mostar, to feel the adventure in Mostar – a town in the heart of Herzegovina. You can visit the town in any time of year, because of the pleasant Mediterranean climate. I can also warmly recommend the Mediterranean delicacies and the well-known hotels in Mostar.

The old town on both banks of river Neretva was thoroughly restored from the previous war damages and is very romantic. They have some of the most funnest attractions in the town of Mostar which they offer throughout the year.

We only had 24 hours in Mostar and couldn’t go anywhere else. If you do have more time, look into visiting the medieval town of Počitelj.

Here are my top reasons why you should plan to visit Mostar for your next vacation.

  1. Old Bridge-Stari Most.
  2. Koski Mehmed Paša Mosque is a simple, but pretty mosque built in 1618.
  3. Kravice Waterfalls are just 40 km outside of Mostar. Kravice Waterfalls is the absolute perfect place to spend a summer day. Around 25 metres high, the waterfalls cascade into a stunning emerald coloured lake.
  4. Blagag Tekke is considered to be one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s most holy and ancient sites. Also known as the Dervish Monastery, the tekija was built to host gatherings of the Sufi Brotherhood.
  5. Good and kind people, excellent food and great fun.

I also present some of the photos taken during my stay in Mostar. Thank you for taking a few moments and reading my story that is based on my trip to Mostar. I hope that you will also choose magical Mostar, described in many stories, for one of your next journeys.
